Transport Manager Responsibilities Explained (UK Guide)

A Transport Manager is not only mandatory in most cases, but also crucial in ensuring a transport operation remains compliant and efficient.


Key Responsibilities

  • Vehicle maintenance - planning prohibitive maintenance inspections in accordance with the conditions stipulated on the operator licence, plus MOTs, tacho calibrations and more

  • Driver compliance - monitoring adherance to the drivers hours regulations, appropriate management of infringements and routine licence checks, training, toolbox talks etc.

  • Record keeping - regualtions stipulate how long driver and vehicle records must be kept. A good Transport Manager will be organised and systematic.

  • Operator Licence compliance - regualrly checking the OCRS score, upadting the licence to reflect any changes and notifying the Traffic Commissioner when necessary.


Legal Accountability

Transport Managers can be held responsible for:

  • Compliance breaches

  • Poor vehicle safety

  • Driver hours violations


External vs Internal

Typically smaller operations or those with a core function other than transport opt for an External Transport Manager. An External Transport Manager can be:

  • More cost-effective

  • More flexible

  • Scalable
